Hymne national Ô Canada

C’est le 24 juin 1880 que l’hymne national du Canada – Ô Canada fut exécuté pour la première fois. L’exécution eut lieu lors du premier congrès catholique des Canadiens français, le jour de la Saint–Jean-Baptiste.

Pour l’occasion, on organisa un concours ayant comme but la création d’un hymne. En effet, l’hymne fut chanté au Québec Skating Club sur les Plaines d’Abraham, où le congrès se célébra.

Les paroles de «Ô Canada» ont été composées par le juge Adolphe-Basile Routhier. La musique a été écrite par le grand Calixa Lavallée, à l’époque organiste de l’église Saint–Patrick–de–Québec.

O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix.
Ton histoire est une épopée,
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

English Translation :

O Canada! Land of our forefathers
Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.
As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,
So also is it ready to carry the cross.
Thy history is an epic of the most brilliant exploits.
Thy valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights
Will protect our homes and our rights.
